Knox automotive business destroyed by fire

KNOX COUNTY - A Knox County automotive business was destroyed by fire on Tuesday.

According to the Knoxville Fire Department, the owner of Keisler Automotive at 3721 Schaad Road called 911 just after 11:30 a.m. He said he'd been welding on the frame of a vehicle when the fire started. He tried to put the fire out himself, but was unsuccessful.

Because the business was located in the county, the Karns Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the fire. When they saw the massive plume of smoke while they were enroute, they called and asked the Knoxville Fire Department for mutual aid.

When firefighters arrived, the business, located behind a home, was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were unable to save the building, which is believed to be a total loss.
No one was hurt.

Automotive Minute: Nissan backs TITAN, TITAN XD with 5-year/100,000-mile warranty (SLIDESHOW)

In an effort to boost truck sales, the nation’s second largest car company has announced a five-year/100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on all 2017 Nissan TITAN and TITAN XD models.
The new warranty offer tops competitors’ offers by two years and over 65,000 miles and comes at a time of great opportunity for Nissan. Though July 2016, the company has sold just 7,242 TITAN and TITAN XD trucks this year compared to Toyota’s 65,440 Tundras and Ford’s 460,901 F-Series sales.

“The new bumper-to-bumper coverage shows customers that Nissan stands behind the quality of its vehicles – including the ones that are subject to the hardest use,”said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager of Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles for Nissan North America Inc.
Nissan has stood behind its vehicles before with a long-term warranty. In June 2014, Nissan introduced “America’s Best Commercial Van Warranty” giving new NV Cargo and Passenger vans five years/100,000 miles of assurance. Nissan attributes the warranty to driving sales, with Nissan NV Cargo and Passenger van sales up nearly 10 percent so far in 2016 and NV200 cargo van sales increasing 17 percent through July.
In Carmel, Calif., last month, Nissan unveiled the new Single Cab options for the TITAN and TITAN XD, projected to be attractive to fleet managers. They will join the crew cab variants of the trucks when Nissan’s full 2017 pick-up truck line arrives in dealerships in late fall 2016.
The additions to Nissan’s truck line-up are assembled in the United States. The new Single Cab models will be assembled in Canton, Miss. with its 5.6-liter V8 gasoline engine assembled in Decherd, Tenn. Cummins, Inc. assembles their 5.0-liter diesel engines in Columbus, Ind.

Youth services heading towards collapse, says union

Youth services heading towards collapse, says union

UK youth services are heading for collapse, union research into the scale of council cuts since 2012 says.
Some 600 youth centres have been shut, 3,650 youth staff have lost their jobs, and 139,000 youth places have been axed, the report for Unison says.
And information from 180 councils warns of more cuts ahead, and suggests the youngsters most in need are being left with nowhere to turn for support.
Local councils said grant cuts meant it was impossible to protect everything.
The union sought information from all UK local authorities with responsibility for youth services on what happened to funding between 2014 and 2016.

'Increasing isolation'

It received responses from 180 out of a total of 210 authorities and added this to earlier similar research dating back to 2012.
The report, A Future at Risk, says an estimated £387m has been cut from youth service budgets since 2010, adding there is "more of the same for youth services in the years to come".
"Already we can report that in the year 2016-17 and beyond, there is likely to be at least £26m more cuts in youth service spending, the loss of around 800 more jobs, more than 30 youth centres closed," it says.
Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said youth workers were tireless in the support they provide to young people, helping them find work and educational opportunity.
He said: "It's youth services which prevent problems happening in the first place by reducing feelings of isolation among young people and helping teenagers to lead positive lives.
"But they've been relentlessly cut and undermined at a time when they are needed more than ever. Youth services are heading for collapse."
This was "damaging life chances", he said, especially for poorer youngsters, and he called for the provision of youth services to be required by law.
Unison also surveyed its members working in youth services for the report, on how they saw the changes affecting young people and communities on the ground.

'Poorest hit hardest'

It reported: "Most strikingly, the overwhelming majority (91%) said the cuts were having a particular impact on young people from poorer backgrounds.
"More than half said there were particular problems for young black people, young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and young women.
"So it appears that the cuts have hit precisely those who often need youth services the most."
One member paints a picture of "increasing isolation and lack of support for young people", while another reports "an increased risk of young people being caught up in gangs".
The report said: "Increases in mental health, substance abuse and anti-social behaviour are bound to increase the pressures on statutory services like social care and child and adolescent mental heath services.
"These are added burdens which could be avoided - or at least mitigated - if youth services were maintained."
The Local Government Association, which represents local authorities in England and Wales, said: "Councils have faced the largest budget cuts in the public sector since 2010, and despite doing all they can to protect the most vital services, it's impossible to protect everything."
It highlighted that the government was planning to spend £1.1bn on the National Citizen Service over the course of this Parliament.
But it added: "While this is a good scheme that provides positive experiences for many children and young people, given the scale of cuts to youth service spending highlighted in this report, it is vital that money to run the NCS should not be at the expense of restoring and supporting local services for young people."

U.S. finds unapproved emissions software in VW Group 3.0-liter diesel engine, report says

U.S. finds unapproved emissions software in VW Group 3.0-liter diesel engine, report says

FRANKFURT -- U.S. authorities have found three unapproved software programs in 3.0-liter diesel engines made by Volkswagen Group's Audi unit, German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported, without saying where it obtained the information.
The software allowed the turbocharged direct injection engines used in the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg models to shut down emissions control systems after about 22 minutes, the paper said. Official methods to measure emissions usually last about 20 minutes, it said.
Volkswagen has admitted it skirted U.S. diesel emissions tests for years and said in June it would spend as much as $15.3 billion buying back vehicles from consumers and providing funding that could benefit makers of cleaner technologies.
That settlement however would not address about 85,000 larger 3.0-liter Audi, Porsche and VW vehicles that emitted less pollution than 2.0-liter vehicles but were also fitted with illegal emissions-control equipment. Audi and Volkswagen notified U.S. authorities about these vehicles last year. A deal covering the 3.0- liter vehicles may still be months away.
Audi managers are scheduled to appear at a hearing in front of U.S. environmental authorities on Aug. 10, Bild am Sonntag said, adding the automaker was bracing for a substantial penalty payment.
An Audi spokesman declined to comment, only saying that talks with U.S. authorities continued and were aimed at a technical solution for the problem.
A spokeswoman for the EPA declined to comment.
The diesel emissions violations continue to undermine VW's U.S. sales, business and reputation and have already cost it billions of dollars. It still faces criminal charges and lawsuits in numerous countries.

And Chelsea manager Antonio Conte pledged that striker Diego Costa was happy at Chelsea and would be staying at the club – and would also figure tonight.
Chelsea face Milan in their third and final game in the International Champions Cup in the inaugural game in the spectacular new $1 billion US Bank stadium.
Conte will throw France midfielder Kante straight into action, so impressed has he been with the former Leicester star’s physical condition.
The Chelsea manager said: “Kante is in good shape. I found him in very good condition - now he is working on tactical aspects. But he is in good shape, he can certainly play one half or 30 minutes. He is ready.”
Conte on Saturday after Chelsea’s defeat against Real Madrid in Ann Arbor, in stark contrast, had said that he did not know if Costa, who has been chased all summer by his old club Atletico Madrid, would be staying.
Costa had missed the previous two games with a back problem, but Conte said: “Diego is Chelsea’s player, and that is the most important thing. He is very happy to stay with us.
“Diego has recovered from his injury and now he is available. I will decide the formation and the starting 11 later. But he is available and I am happy I can count on him.”
Chelsea have tabled a renewed British record £65m bid for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, and are also negotiating for £38m Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
Conte confirmed that there will be more transfer activity – in and out – before the season starts in two weeks time.
Tonight’s opponents Milan are chasing Chelsea’s Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado. The Serie A club want to secure a loan deal for a year for £8.5m - with a view to a permanent deal for a further £15m next summer.
Coach Vincenzo Montella, who coached Cuadrado at Fiorentina, said: “He’s a player for Chelsea, you are going to have to ask him.”
Conte said: "Cuadrado is a Chelsea player. He's working very hard. Everyone knows what I think about Juan Cuadrado.
"Good players always have interest during the transfer window. He's a Chelsea player now.
"What happens in the future I can't answer for."
Inter Milan have also made a £30m inquiry for Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder Oscar.

Kurt Zouma is back training for the first time since his knee ligament injury sustained against Manchester United in February.
Conte said: "Zouma is improving a lot and this is good news. But we know that his injury was very bad and for this reason we must respect the time it takes.
"It’s important Zouma takes his time to be sure that when he goes into the team he stays there.
"But for me it’s important to see he’s improving and I’m very happy for the guy because his injury was very bad."
